A little about Aerie

Aerie is located on the western slope of the Tortolita Mountains in Pinal County, Arizona. To help orient you to the conditions here I am including gardening zones as well as other descriptors. The gardening zones are Sunset Garden zone 12, but on the edge of 10 and it is in USDA 9a, but on the edge of 8b. Since I believe strongly in preserving and working with the natural desert, it is also important to include the natural community type we reside in.

Aerie exists within the Arizona Upland desertscrub with dominant trees of velvet mesquite, foothill paloverde, ironwood, cat claw acacia, white thorn acacia, chainfruit cholla, staghorn cholla, and saguaro. Dominant lower story plants are creosote, triangle leaf bursage, hedgehog cactus, barrel cactus, desert hackberry, and wolfberry. The property lies within open range and does not currently have fencing, though it is planned for. Common animal residents are round tailed ground squirrel, antelope squirrel, pack rats, kangaroo rats, cottontail rabbits, jack rabbits, a wide variety of lizards including spiny and zebra tailed, rattlesnakes, whiptail snakes, cardinals, cactus wrens, guilded flickers, Bendire's thrashers, ash throated flycatchers, house finches, inca doves, white wing doves, mourning doves, Gila woodpeckers, harris hawks, great horned owls, gambel's quail, phainopeplas, pyrrhuloxia, ravens, and turkey vultures. There are many more shorter term vistors.
